Supporting local businesses lifts the community

Small Business Saturday has been called a shopping holiday. It is actually a movement of sorts, started six years ago by American Express, to celebrate the smaller, independently owned businesses that are the fabric of downtowns across America. Smack dab between Black Friday, a day when mall shoppers brave the big-box stores for early-morning bargains, and Cyber Monday, when shoppers use the power of the internet to buy goods from faraway places from business owners they don’t know, Small Business Saturday reminds us of the importance of shopping small and supporting our local economy.

You’ve probably heard the statistics before, but they are worth repeating. For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community, compared to only $43 if you spend that same $100 at a national chain. But did you also realize that when you shop locally, you help create jobs for firemen and police officers as well as help keep valuable city services operating through locally generated tax revenue? When you buy locally, you conserve energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. And, if you needed another compelling reason to shop locally, did you know that local business owners donate to local community causes at more than twice the rate of chains?

Behind every small business in Carlsbad Village, there is a story worth knowing — young entrepreneurs living out their dream, a mother-and-daughter duo choosing the Village for their third store location, or a husband-and-wife team who started their business selling at street fairs in a 10-foot-by-10-foot tent. While the merchants and service providers in the Village want to impress you on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 26), they really do want to see you more than just then. Whether it’s a midweek night out for burgers and gelato with the family, a girls’ day out at the spa or a holiday shopping excursion, or whether it’s for an engagement ring, a new pair of shoes, a dance lesson, a haircut or a teeth cleaning, we hope you will embrace the “Shop Small, Shop Local” movement and consider Carlsbad Village your go-to place for absolutely everything all year long.
