Carlsbad police rescue would-be jumper

The city of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the intersection of Pio Pico Drive and Chestnut Avenue on March 12 at 5 p.m. regarding a single vehicle traffic collision.

The Police Department was also notified that the driver of the vehicle had walked onto the Interstate 5 freeway.

Arriving officers found that a single vehicle had collided with a wall, according to a Police Department press release.

Officers searched the area and found a 36-year-old, white male sitting outside the railing of the Chestnut Avenue Interstate 5 southbound overpass. The male was threatening to jump from the overpass. Officers also learned that the male had intentionally crashed his vehicle in an attempt to harm himself.

Officers, assisted by the Carlsbad Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol, negotiated with the male for approximately 30 minutes. During the negotiations, officers saw an opportunity to approach the subject and physically remove him from the overpass.

The subject was taken to a local mental health care facility for treatment.
