Carlsbad marathon set for return

What’s now known as the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon will take place Sunday, Jan. 15.

The following streets will be closed from approximately 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on race day, the city says in a press release: Marron Road between Monroe Street and Jefferson Street; Monroe Street between Marron Road and Carlsbad Village Drive; Jefferson Street between Marron Road and Laguna Drive; Laguna Drive between Jefferson Street and State Street; State Street between Laguna Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard; Carlsbad Boulevard all lanes between the Buena Vista Lagoon and La Costa Avenue; Palomar Airport Road between Carlsbad Boulevard and El Camino Real (both directions from Carlsbad Boulevard to Avenida Encinas, then eastbound lanes only from Avenida Encinas to El Camino Real); Avenida Encinas between Cannon Road and Palomar Airport Road; and Poinsettia Lane between Avenida Encinas and Carlsbad Boulevard

The following streets will be closed from approximately 5 a.m to 11 a.m.: Camino Vida Roble between Palomar Oaks Way and Palomar Airport Road; Palomar Oaks Way entire roadway; I-5 at Palomar Airport Road both northbound and southbound off-ramps and southbound on-ramp closed; and Palomar Airport Road between I-5 and El Camino Road (eastbound only).

The city of Carlsbad Police Department and volunteers will assist cars that need to get in or out of closed or partially closed areas, when safety allows. Those who need to get in or out of the race area during the event can do so on a nearby street not affected by race-day closures.

The Carlsbad Marathon begins and ends at The Shoppes at Carlsbad shopping center and the race course runs from the mall to Carlsbad Boulevard and continues as far south as La Costa Avenue. The marathon also runs inland along Palomar Airport Road as far east as El Camino Real.

The marathon starts at 6:15 a.m., and the half-marathon begins at 7:45 a.m. More than 10,000 participants and 2,000 spectators are expected.

The race weekend includes a free Health & Lifestyle Expo on Friday, Jan. 13, from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., under a tent at the Shoppes at Carlsbad shopping center parking lot. Vendors, interactive displays, free samples and bargains on apparel and equipment will be available. Participants also will be able to pick up their timing tags, bib numbers and T-shirts at the tent.

The weekend also offers a Kids Marathon Mile at Legoland on Saturday, Jan. 14, starting at 8 a.m.  This one-mile, noncompetitive staged run/walk is geared for children of all ages and abilities. Entertainment and other activities will take place on the main event stage at Legoland immediately following the kids’ races.
