The “Eco Container,” sponsored by Kashi, was unveiled on opening day, June 3, at the San Diego County Fair, the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation announced.
The San Diego County Fair takes place through July 4 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Del Mar.
The Solana Center’s Eco Container is a re-purposed shipping container that has been transformed into a center for environmental innovation, featuring solar energy, a grey water demo system, rain barrels, composting, drought tolerant landscaping and California-friendly gardens. Designed to educate and inspire visitors about sustainability, the Eco Container demonstrates how to incorporate energy-saving, water-efficient and eco-friendly practices into our daily lives, according to the Solana Center. It is located at the San Diego County Fair’s Infield Farm, where attendees can see thriving vegetable gardens, watch worms turn food scraps into rich soil amendment, visit a butterfly garden and see a colony of bees in action, among other activities.
The Solana Center also has an interactive booth sponsored by the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department featuring free composting demonstrations every Sunday at 2:30 p.m. throughout June at the Fair.
County Supervisor Dave Roberts spoke and cut the ribbon at the opening of the Eco Container exhibit.
