Del Mar resident Melissa Scott Clark is perhaps best known as a “Baywatch” cast member 20 years ago.
However, she has traded in her bright red bathing suit (it still hangs in her closet) for a business suit as she is now the co-owner of Luxury Farms, a housewares retailer.
“I have always loved being creative, whether through acting or manufacturing consumer products,” she said. She found an outlet for her creativity working with business partner Gina Champion-Cain, and the idea for Luxury Farms was born.
“When [Champion-Cain] learned about a gourmet food collection I was manufacturing for placement in Dean & Deluca stores in Japan, one thing led to another and we decided to open our own retail store around the corner from The Patio on Goldfinch Mission Hills [in San Diego],” Scott Clark said. “This new retail store would house our own gourmet foods as well as unique items for the kitchen and home.”
Unique items at Luxury Farms include clay-fired Guinea Hens, the French cook-wear line Cristel, and product from S’well Bottle.
“My work has taken me to interesting places in world resulting in my collecting many beautiful things,” Scott Clark said. “I wanted to share those with the overall community hoping someday I could show San Diegans products they have never seen before.”
A little more than a year after the opening of the original store in San Diego in two years ago, the ladies celebrated the opening of their second location in Coronado, Calif.
“The first location was quickly and warmly accepted by local residents, which accelerated the plans for a second store,” she added.
The second location also proved to be incredibly popular with the local residents, Scott Clark said.
“I’ve actually had ladies come up and hug and thank me for bringing them our gourmet cheeses, fresh organic juice, and kitchen ware that they don’t have to leave the island for; we couldn’t be happier there,” she said.
With two successful locations, Scott Clark is planning to open a third in Solana Beach at the end of this year.
“This year is very exciting already,” she said. “We are launching our highly anticipated e-commerce website in the second quarter of this year; a new product line with KASHI and a wonderful new Olive Oil partnership bringing us a fresh and delicious product line we believe to be second to none.”
