City Treasurer Gary M. Ernst has died of natural causes, according to a press release from the city of Oceanside. He was 61 years old.
Ernst was a long time resident of Oceanside, active in the Oceanside Rotary and International Rotary and was an active member of the California Treasurers Association, the release noted. Ernst held a BSM degree from California State University, Los Angeles, and a master’s degree in business administration from Pepperdine University. He also was a Certified Municipal Treasurer.
“Our city mourns the loss of City Treasurer Gary Ernst, a dedicated public servant,” stated Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood. “Gary will be deeply missed by the city council, staff and community.”
Ernst was appointed city treasurer in December 2010, to fill the unexpired term of Gary Felien. He was elected to his first full term as city treasurer in November 2012. He served on the city of Oceanside’s Treasury Investment Oversight Committee from July 2000 until his appointment as city treasurer.
The Oceanside Rotary stated that his family is planning a service tentatively scheduled for between Oct. 10 and 16, according to the city.
