The city of Oceanside’s Parks & Recreation Commission and the Senior Standing Committee named Sylvia Spiva Senior of the Year Wednesday, according to a city press release.
She was one of six nominees for the award, including Rhea Amid, Dr. Adrianne Hakes, Willie Little, James Schroder and Gail Wells.
Spiva received a proclamation from Mayor Jim Wood and a plaque that will hang at the Country Club Senior Center, as well as gifts including a $75 Gift Certificate to Dominic’s Restaurant at the Oceanside Harbor. Also, Mayor Wood proclaimed Oct. 13 Sylvia Spiva Day in Oceanside.
Spiva has been involved in many organizations in the city, including the Elks Club, Mainstreet Oceanside and Visit Oceanside. She was instrumental in raising funds for the Oceanside Police Department K-9 program (bullet proof vests for police dogs), according to the release.
